Jan Floris van der Schaaf was born in Almenum on April 30, 1866. As a small boy, he lived in Midlum. In May of 1875 he was moved, with his older brother Sjoerd, to the armhuis in Tzum. He moved to Grouw in May of 1889, after which he is no longer mentioned in Dutch records. He followed his brother to Patterson, NJ in the US on May 6, 1892.
